| Chip-Stock -- Export
The USPB International Chip-Stock Program is only a few years old, but has already generated exceptional results. As the potato chip industry continues to grow around the world, the program is geared to take advantage of the many viable export opportunities for fresh chipping potatoes.
The objectives of the International Chip-Stock Program are to educate chip manufacturers and build a greater understanding of US chipping potato varieties, characteristics and technical requirements.
The following are the strategies behind creating new markets for chipping potatoes:
- Conduct In-Depth Market Research
This research identifies true market potential and barriers to trade. It focuses on potential new markets for chipping potatoes and helps determine which markets meet the entry strategy criteria for the program.
- Remove Market Access Barriers
A great deal of attention is directed at opening closed markets and improving access to other markets. The USPB will continue to work with USDA in conjunction with the State Potato Organizations and National Potato Council to address barriers to exports.
- Conduct Market Development Programs
The USPB educates chip processors in target markets about US chipping potatoes through reverse trade missions, seminars, materials presented in-market and samples provided through the USDA Quality Samples Program. Commercial relationships and understanding are developed when US growers travel to foreign markets as part of trade missions.
- Conduct Market Maintenance Program
The USPB maintains its presence in markets importing US potatoes, which includes issues management and market access.
- Increase US fresh industry involvement in exports
The USPB continues to work with US chip-stock growers interested in export markets by identifying opportunities and providing relevant information so they will be prepared to adequately respond to the identified opportunities. The Board also works with the Chip Committee as they provide an excellent resource for the chip-stock export program.
Current Target Markets:
Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam and Central America.
